How to write an Instagram bio (with link-in-bio examples)
A strong Instagram bio names who you help, what you do, and what to do next — usually in three short lines — then puts one link in the bio link field. Instagram's Help Center says the bio can be up to 150 characters. Use a link-in-bio page when you need more than one destination.
Create your free NexLink page: up to 2 sites, 50 links each, no credit card.
NexLink publishes this page. The examples below are original placeholders you can adapt. They are not celebrity bios, customer stories or measured click rates.
The 3-line Instagram bio formula
Write three short lines, in this order: who you are, who you help or what you offer, and the next step. A visitor should understand the profile without decoding a list of keywords.
- Who you are. A role or a place is enough: baker, tutor, film club, photographer. Put your name in the Name field when the bio needs the space for the offer.
- Who you help, or what you offer. One concrete phrase. “Weeknight meals for busy people” is clearer than a stack of topics.
- What to do next. Ask for one action: book, listen, read, shop or see the calendar. The website field should open that destination, or a page that lists several.
Line breaks count toward the 150-character limit, and so do emojis. Write the words first. Add a mark only when it helps someone scan.
Step-by-step: edit your Instagram bio
Checked October 27, 2026 against Instagram’s Help Center article “Add a bio to your Instagram profile” for iPhone, Android and computer. Each version says you can write a bio of up to 150 characters and that anyone can see it. Button labels differ by device. If your screen does not match this list, use the Help Center page for the device you are holding.
- Open your profile. On iPhone and Android, Instagram's Help Center says to tap Profile or your profile picture. On a computer, click your profile picture.
- Open Edit profile. The bio help articles place this control at the top of the profile. If your app uses a different label, follow the Help Center page for that device.
- Edit the Bio field, and update Name only if you want the display name to change. Instagram's Help Center says the bio can be up to 150 characters and that anyone can see it.
- Save. iPhone help says tap Done. Computer help says click Submit. Android help says tap to save. Then read the profile the way a visitor would.
- Add the website separately under Links when you want a tappable destination. Text typed into the bio is not the same as a saved profile link.
Name, bio and links are different jobs in the profile editor. This list follows the bio article. For the website control, use how to add an Instagram bio link.

Where the link goes
The bio can mention a next step. The tappable URL belongs in Instagram’s website field, not only as plain text in the 150 characters. Instagram documents a small number of profile links. When you need a shop, a letter and a booking page at the same time, put one link in bio address in that field and list the destinations on the page. Linktree is one brand that does this. NexLink’s free plan is another. The steps for saving the URL are in the Instagram bio link guide.
The three bios below show the text plus the link line. bio.nexl.ink/your-name is the shape of a NexLink URL after you choose a username. It is not a live customer page, and these lines are not claims about anyone’s results.

If you only have one destination, link to it directly. Open the saved link from the profile before you announce it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Keyword stuffing. A row of unrelated topics hides the offer. Use the three lines for one thing you do.
- A dead link-in-bio page. Tap the saved URL from the Instagram app. A draft, an expired offer or a 404 still looks like a finished profile.
- An emoji wall with no request. Marks can separate lines. They cannot replace the line that says what to do next.
- An outdated “link in bio”. If a caption sends people to the profile, the first button should match that post. Remove last month’s launch when it is over.
After your bio is live
Instagram does not name which accounts tapped your profile link. Read who can see Instagram bio link clicks before you treat a count as a list of people. On a NexLink page, analytics separate views from button clicks and still do not identify an Instagram username.
Refresh the page when the offer changes. Templates are link orders you recreate, not imported bios. TikTok’s website field has extra rules, covered in the TikTok bio link guide. To compare tools, see Linktree alternatives.
